Whitby Jet is the fossilised remains of a tree, similar to the monkey puzzle tree sourced from the English town of Whitby in North Yorkshire. It became very popular in the Victorian period as it was custom for a widow to wear black during a period of mourning (often spanning 2 years) Queen Victoria mourned her beloved prince Albert’s death in 1861 for the remainder of her life (40 years) during this time she wore only black attire adorned with black mourning jewellery.
This Neoclassic Cameo brooch is in very good antique condition, it has a strong t-bar and C-clasp fitting verso
