Antique, Victorian, Micro Mosaic ‘Doves of Pliny’ Italian Grand Tour Brooch, C1880
A lovely Victorian micro mosaic brooch depicting the “Doves of Pliny” on a black glass bevel edged panel, mounted in a gilt metal rope edged frame.
Very popular during the Grand tour, the micro mosaic brooches are made with tiny mosaic pieces (tesserae) of glass.
The image comes from a Roman floor mosaic discovered in 1737 at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, which in turn is believed to be a copy of a lost ancient Greek mosaic at Pergamon.
The micro mosaic is mounted in a gold tone frame (pinchbeck) with a decorative rope edge.
