Description
Victorian, Gold, Black Onyx and seed pearl Hair mourning brooch with glazed locket compartment & inscription (1889)
A quality, antique mourning brooch with an oval black onyx plaque mounted with a gold and seed pearl ‘star motif’, the onyx is mounted in a gold and bead frame with gold rope edging. There is a glazed locket verso, containing plaited blonde hair, with a hand-engraved inscription as follows: Orbit 3rd Sept Aged 70 years, George Whatelen 1889.
This brooch is from the estate of the late Jane Sumner (reputable antique dealer and collector of fine antiques and jewellery).
On the reverse is the following inscription:
Complete with gold pin, T-bar and C-Clasp fitting.
