Description
Victorian gold, black Enamel, Pearl & Diamond mourning brooch with compartment verso, 26.5 x 33.5mm
Circa 1840
An antique, early Victorian mourning brooch designed with a single flower of seed pearls with a rose cut diamond centre (resembling a forget me knot) mounted on a black enamel panel framed with a scalloped gold border (please see images))
The face of the brooch is in good condition with all of the original pearls and diamond intact, there is no damage to the enamel.
On the reverse is a compartment that would have, originally been used to hold a keepsake, normally a lock of hair, the compartment is vacant and is missing the glazed section that would have held the keepsake inplace.
Complete with T-pin and C-clasp fitting
The older brooches had longer metal pins for added strength and length for attaching to heavy, outer garments.
