Antique, Victorian 18ct, 18k, 750 Sapphire and diamond cluster ring, Circa 1880
This exquisite piece of jewellery has a central 6 x 5mm oval, faceted “royal blue” Sapphire mounted in a crimped setting, surrounding the Sapphire are fourteen rose-cut Diamonds mounted in a closed back setting, all beautifully made in 18carat gold.
The head of the ring measures 9mm across the finger with a width of 10mm.
Hallmarked: 18ct (denotes 18ct gold).
The Sapphire is a gorgeous royal blue colour (there is a tiny chip and some minor abrasions on the top facets of the gemstone – only visible with a jewellers loupe) estimated carat weight is 0.45 to 0.50ct
Rose cut diamonds date back to the early 1500s. With anywhere from three to 24 triangular facets, rose cut diamonds peak into a dome or kite-shape. This structure resembles the soft curve of a rose petal, hence its name!
