ABOUT ESSEX CRYSTAL
All Essex crystal jewellery is skillfully made using a piece of clear rock crystal. The crystal is cut into a cabochon (flat back & rounded dome shaped top), and then working from the flat back the artisan carefully carves a detailed design into it. Then the carved-out design is painted so that it appears to float, in three dimensions inside the crystal, when viewed from the front and sides. This technique is called “reverse carving.”
Reputedly this art form began in Europe and the process was introduced to England during the 1860’s, the finished crystals were initially sold by Hancock’s in London.
This technique was named Essex crystal after a very popular artist named William Essex, who specialized in enamel miniatures, he was assumed to have produced them because of the fineness of the workmanship.
Essex was one of Queen Victoria’s favourite portrait artists and so it assumed that such quality of work must be his!
Highly collectable, these pieces are minature works of art!
