Gorgeous Georgian 15ct Natural pearl & Amethyst foil backed brooch, pin
Circa 1780
An exquisite antique, Georgian natural pearl & Amethyst brooch beautifully made with a central, oval faceted, foil backed Amethyst, mounted in a high carat gold, crimped setting (tests to at least 15ct gold).
The Amethyst has a fine border of pearls and a decorative pearl studded frame in a scalloped design with a little hook at the top.
The natural wild pearls ranging in size from a tiny 1mm seed pearl to a 4×4.5mm pearl, the pearls are hand sewn onto a mother of pearl backing.
There are two main pearls missing – otherwise in good condition.
Complete with a gold backing and t-bar with c-clasp fitting.

Tiny natural pearls from India were used extensively in Georgian Jewellery, they were hand sewn onto a drilled mother of pearl backing and designed into delicate, exquisite pieces of jewellery. Many of the pearls used were from the Pinctada radiata oyster found in the Persian Gulf, the Red seas and Sri Lanka.
