Description
Exquisite, Edwardian 9ct, 9k, 375 Gold Sapphire & Pearl, Necklace, Lavalier,
Circa 1905
This pretty lavaliere necklace features a central section with Sapphires and seed pearls designed as leaves and flower buds.
There is evidence that this was originally a brooch that has been converted to a necklace with the addition of a faceted belcher link chain.
The centre piece is from the Art Nouveau era, and the chain added later.
Hallmarked: 375 (denotes 9carat gold)
The Sapphire gemstones are a lovely ‘cornflower blue’ colour.
Pearl is the traditional birthstone for June
Sapphire is the traditional birthstone for September
The name Lavalier (also spelt lavalier or lavallière) derived from the name of the Duchesse de La Vallière (1644-1710), one of the mistresses of Louis XIV, who favoured this style of necklace.
